 1/2 cup apple sauce
 1/2 cup peanut butter
 1/3 cup maple syrup
 2 tbsp sugar (can use brown sugar or a healthier sugar)
 1/3 cup cocoa powder
 Pinch of salt
 1 tsp baking soda
 1 tsp vanilla extract
 1 cup chocolate chips , divided

Preheat the oven to 350F. Line an 8 x 8-inch pan with parchment paper and set aside.

In a large mixing bowl, add the applesauce, peanut butter, and maple syrup and whisk together until smooth.
Add the sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, salt, and vanilla extract and mix until just combined. Fold in 1/2 cup chocolate chips.

Transfer the batter into the lined pan and top with the remaining 1/2 cup chocolate chips.

Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out mostly clean.

Remove the brownies from the oven and let them cool completely before cutting.

Notes

Can substitute peanut butter for almond butter or another nut butter
